Why this exists
The material came first.
After years in flooring, you start to notice what most people never see: the material choices underneath the finished room. Some floors are made to be replaced quickly. Some are difficult to justify once you ask where they came from and where they go next.
Montado was built around a different material. Cork begins as bark. The tree stays standing. The surface that arrives indoors carries a quieter story from the start.
The materials around us shape how a room feels long before we explain why.
Why cork
From the montado to the room.
Montado is the name for a Portuguese landscape: cork oak trees standing wide apart over open pasture, worked by hand for generations rather than farmed like a plantation. It covers around 730,000 hectares of southern Portugal, one of the country's largest and richest habitats.
Cutting down a cork oak is illegal in Portugal. Every tree is individually registered, and the bark is stripped by hand once every nine years or so, leaving the tree to keep growing, some for centuries. Granorte turns that harvested bark into the floors and wall surfaces we bring to the UK.
We took our name from that landscape, because it's where every floor starts.
Only use what grows back. Only build with materials that do not destroy the habitats they come from.

Montado began with twenty years in the flooring industry and a move into health and wellness. That shift was not accidental. The connection between the materials in our homes and the health of the people living in them is real and largely ignored.
Montado was not started to build a business. It was started because the flooring industry needed someone to say out loud what most people inside it already knew.
Cork is the beginning. Flooring first. Furniture next. The aim is to change how an entire industry thinks about materials.
